Journeys believes that:

PROBLEMS ARE PROBLEMS

PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE

PEOPLE ARE NOT PROBLEMS

Counselling and support invites people into seeing themselves as not being a problem. It frees them to explore the effects of problems on their lives and work. It helps people discover the stories of their lives and work which create opportunities for them to be who they want to be.

PERSONAL COUNSELLING

We all experience problems in our lives. Some of these problems are more difficult to deal with than others. Sometimes we can resolve these problems on our own or with support from friends or family. Sometimes these problems just seem to go away without needing help from anyone.

There are some times when the effects of problems become too big for us and we need to get help from more than family or friends. This is where a counsellor can help.

Narrative Counselling with Journeys can help in taking charge of your life from the effects of problems. It can't necessarily change a problem but it can help you to change the ways the problem has an effect on your life. It can help you see problems differently and as separate from you and to know that you are not a problem yourself. Looking at problems this way can help you to be in charge of your own life rather than having problems or their influuence in charge of your life.

Download a free questionnaire now to help you with making sense of the effects of problems on your life.

You can also have a brief response to your answers for a cost of $25.00 AUD or a full email counselling session for $70.00 per session of up to 1.5 hours. Refer to 'How It Works' for details. If Journeys finds there are others experiencing the effects of similar problems you may be wish to join a secure email group for $25.00 per session.

COUPLE OR RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING

We live in a world which makes it very difficult for couples to live without conflict. Sometimes the differences between partners in a relationship are easy to deal with and are treated as being part of a 'normal' relationship. At other times these differences become too big for comfort. Partners find that problems can get them thinking negatively about each other and distorting their beliefs, attitudes and opinions about each other and their intentions for the relationship. These problems can become very separating for couples.

Narrative Counselling with Journeys can help by inviting couples into what connects them rather than focusing on what separates them. Couple counselling or individual and couple counselling can help couples to discover what they really want for the relationship, for the other person and for themselves. It can help them to discover what love's version of the relationship rather than problems' version of the relationship. It can help them to make sense of the many different meanings that our world gives to relationships and to make their own choices about their preferences for how their relationship might work.

FAMILY COUNSELLING

There is a common belief in our world that families are the backbone of our society and that everyone can and must be happy in a family. This is far from the truth as most families experience problems, which they often keep to themselves. Have you ever heard the experession "Keep it in the family?"

Families are places in which many problems occur ranging from something as serious as abuse to something like a simple argument. In reality, families are not easy to live in and members of families are expected to live together and get on with life without acknowledging problems. There are many secrets kept in families.

Narrative Counselling with Journeys can help by giving family members the space to claim a voice for themselves when they experience problems or different ways of seeing the world inside or outside the family. It can offer any family member the opportunity to speak up in safety about their experiences, their attitudes, beliefs and opinions and their strengths. It can offer the possibility of finding connections between family members rather than listening to the importance being placed on differences. It can help families explore how they survive the pressures of living together rather than look at how problems destroy the family. It can help families discover together the many ways of being a family and their preferred ways of being a family rather than giving in to what the 'ideal' family is meant to be.

MEN AND RELATIONSHIPS

Working with Men

Have you ever found yourself saying or doing things with people close to you which you would rather not have done or said?

JOURNEYS invites men to explore respectful and sensitive ways of being with their partners and families and to take responsibility for and to change any disrespectful, insensitive, abusive or violent behaviours of the past.

This exploration and sharing of stories of relationship experiences and of desire to change uses a NARRATIVE approach and may be done via the secure internet E-mail or chat or face to face in the offices of Journeys through

  • Individual counselling with men
  • Couple counselling with men and their partners (only when appropriate and safe)
  • Groups of men sharing together or
  • A combination of these

All of these possibilities include consulting with partners for accountability and for safety of their children.

The NARRATIVE approach is based on the belief that the stories of people's lives are shaped by events and experiences which have been part of their lives.

These stories make up who we are. They are an expression of our values, attitudes, beliefs, and opinions about how and where we fit into the world in which we belong.

There is a history to all these stories and sometimes they are made up of 'shoulds' and 'expectations' for men about what it means to be a 'real man'. They may prevent a man from being who he would prefer to be.

These stories may also invite a man into acting in ways which he prefers not to act. These stories may easily trick a man into believing that he does not have any choices about the ways in which he thinks, feels and behaves in relationships.

Another part of the history of stories is that there are different stories of what it means to be a man in this world. These stories are about ways that men take a stand against abuse and violence in their relationships.

In working with men, a NARRATIVE approach explores some of these ways that men stand up for respect and sensitivity towards others. It invites men into the stories of their lives and beliefs about themselves and their maleness which have created opportunities for them to make choices about

  • being respectful and sensitive
  • being who they want to be and
  • being free from who they may have believed they 'should' be.

The content of conversations during counselling sessions may include:

  • How men do not like hurting other people and would prefer to behave respectfully towards other people, especially those who are close to them
  • Understanding how men can feel trapped and frustrated in their relationships
  • Sharing of understandings of the meanings of being a man in relationships
  • The nature of men's power in a world dominated by men and how this may invite men into taking control over others in relationships
  • How men are drawn into turning power given to manhood by our world into a right to control partners and family members
  • That disrespectful, insensitive, abusive and violent behaviours by men in relationships are a choice they make
  • That men can equally choose to be respectful and sensitive no matter what they feel
  • Understanding and acknowledging the effects on others of disrespect, insensitivity, abuse and violence
  • Exploring what gets in the way of a man being respectful and sensitive in relationships
  • What prevents a man from taking responsibility for past disrespect, insensitivity, abuse and violence
  • Ways of taking responsibility for stopping disrespectful, insensitive, abusive or violent behaviours on a permanent and on-going basis
  • Accountability towards partners for the effects of past behaviour and the current work of change
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of partners and children
  • Development of life affirming stories of personal strength, courage and competence for men and their partners and children
  • Discovering new ways of relating with respect and sensitivity

Download a free questionnaire now about your respect and sensitivity in your relationships. Refer to "What is Journeys" for costs of services. To become part of a group discussion about these problems please return your questionnaire via E-mail and you will be notified about when the group will begin.
